About OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap provides an editing API for fetching and saving raw geodata to and from the OpenStreetMap database. It is intended for editing map data rather than read-only access; developers who only need read access are directed toward the Overpass API, and those wanting to embed a map into a webpage are directed toward a web map library instead.

The current version is API v0.6, implemented server-side by the Rails port. Earlier versions (v0.3 through v0.5) are no longer in use, and a v0.7 is in brainstorming stages for the next iteration.

Use of the editing API is governed by an API usage policy, and clients may be blocked without notice if they affect service levels for other users or cause data corruption. Imports and automated edits are restricted to those with experience and understanding of how the OpenStreetMap community creates maps, requiring careful planning and consultation with the local community per the Import Guidelines and Automated Edits code of conduct; edits that do not follow these guidelines may be reverted.

  • Editing API for fetching and saving raw geodata to/from the OpenStreetMap database
  • REST specification currently at API v0.6
  • Read-only geodata access available via the separate Overpass API
  • Rails port serves as the current full server-side implementation
