The Spotify Web API lets developers build applications that interact with Spotify's streaming service, including retrieving content metadata (albums, artists, tracks, episodes, audiobooks, shows) and creating and managing playlists. It also supports playback control, such as starting/pausing playback, skipping tracks, seeking to a position, adjusting volume, and managing playback queues and devices.
Access requires creating an app through the Spotify developer dashboard to obtain credentials, which are used to request an access token for API authorization. Additional capabilities include search, user library management (saving/removing tracks, albums, shows, episodes, and audiobooks), following artists and users, and retrieving user profile and top-items data. A Spotify Premium account is required to use the Web API.
The API itself is accessed via app credentials from the developer dashboard, but a Spotify Premium account is required to use the Web API.
The API supports authorization code (with PKCE), client credentials, and a deprecated implicit grant flow, all using access tokens obtained after creating an app in the dashboard.

Developers can retrieve metadata (albums, artists, tracks, playlists, shows) and control playback (start/pause, skip, seek, volume, queue) on a user's active device.
