Smartcar provides an API platform for connecting applications to vehicles across more than 40 OEM brands. Developers use it to retrieve vehicle data signals such as odometer readings, location, and battery level, and to issue vehicle commands. Vehicle access is granted through Smartcar Connect, a patented OAuth 2.0 consent flow that lets end users authorize an application to access their vehicle's data.

Authentication uses the OAuth 2.0 Client Credentials flow, where an application exchanges its client ID and secret for a single access token (valid for one hour, no refresh token) that works across all connected vehicles. Applications can receive vehicle data through webhooks configured to trigger on events like location or battery state of charge changes, with a webhook receiver recipe available as an AWS serverless deployment option.

Smartcar offers SDKs and documentation for integrating with iOS, Android, and React applications, along with a dashboard for managing applications, team settings, and single sign-on. It provides a simulator mode for testing connections without live vehicles. The product is aimed at developers building applications that need programmatic access to vehicle data and controls, including use cases in fleet management, EV charging, insurance, roadside assistance, and vehicle history reporting.
