ReSmush.it is a free image compression API that reduces file size for JPG, PNG, GIF, TIF, and BMP images. Requests can be made via GET, POST, or direct file upload, and the service returns a JSON response containing the source and optimized image URLs, original and compressed file sizes, percentage improvement, and an expiration date for the hosted file. JPG compression quality can be adjusted with a qlty parameter (0-100, default 92), and EXIF data is stripped by default but can be retained with an exif parameter. Uploaded files must be under 5 MB, and requests must include a User-Agent header and Referer.

The service is free for personal use with no usage restriction beyond the file size limit; commercial or business use requires contacting reSmush.it for a separate arrangement. It is built as a drop-in replacement for the discontinued Yahoo Smush.it webservice and is compatible with the Drupal ImageAPI Optimize module and the official WordPress reSmush.it Image Optimizer plugin, making it suited for developers integrating automated image optimization into websites or CMS platforms.

The API is operated by ShortPixel, which also offers a separate, more advanced paid API supporting WebP and AVIF generation for users needing additional format conversion capabilities.
