Open Data from the UK's largest water and wastewater services company.
Thames Water Open Data is an API portal providing programmatic access to open data from Thames Water Utilities Limited. Available resources include the Discharge To Environment (DTE) endpoints, which give historical and current statuses of storm discharge activities, and the Acoustic Logger Data endpoint, which offers acoustic logger sensor waveform files and associated metadata. Responses are returned as JSON, with a common metadata block and support for filtering, pagination, and comparison operators (greater-than, less-than, equals, not-equals, and their inclusive variants) across query parameters.
The portal is intended for developers and researchers working with environmental data and water infrastructure monitoring. API access requires signing in or registering, and use is governed by published terms of service. Requests are limited to 5 per second per user, with per-endpoint response limits (up to 1000 records).
A newer version of the APIs is being launched on a separate portal that removes the registration requirement, and migrating to it will involve breaking changes to the URL and API behavior compared to the current version described here.
The APIs provide open data access; a new portal at docs.api.thameswater.co.uk no longer requires registration, while the current portal requires signing in or registering for access.
Responses are returned in JSON, with a metadata block and an items array containing the endpoint-specific data.
The portal offers Discharge To Environment (DTE) data on storm discharge activities and Acoustic Logger Data with sensor waveform files and metadata.
Yes, the APIs allow up to 5 requests per second per user, though a strict limit is not currently enforced.
It is intended for developers and researchers interested in environmental data and water infrastructure monitoring.
