About RuneScape

RuneScape provides a set of application programming interfaces used by developers, fansite operators, and bots to retrieve game and wiki data. These include the RuneScape Wiki API (built on MediaWiki, with an API Explorer and API Sandbox for constructing requests), a Bestiary API, a Grand Exchange Database API covering both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape item catalogues, Hiscores endpoints for skills, activities, clans, and various game modes (including Ironman, Hardcore Ironman, Deadman Mode, and Seasonal variants), and endpoints for player details, RuneMetrics profile data, and NXT developer resources.

The Grand Exchange Database API returns JSON data on tradeable and non-tradeable items, including item images, categories, prices, price trends, and descriptions, queried by category, starting letter, page number, or item ID. Most official APIs do not return CORS headers permitting direct use from front-end code on external websites, so calls are expected to be made from a backend server; the wiki notes that CORS restrictions can be circumvented within a Chrome extension.

These APIs are intended for developers building tools, fansites, or bots that interact with RuneScape or Old School RuneScape data, such as item price trackers, bestiary lookups, or player statistics displays.

Frequently asked questions

What data formats does the API return?

Queries return JSON (JavaScript Object Notation).

Can I call these APIs directly from frontend code in a browser?

No, most official RuneScape APIs do not send correct CORS headers, so calls should be made from a dedicated backend; a Chrome extension can be used to circumvent this.

Does the API cover Old School RuneScape as well as RuneScape 3?

Yes, Old School RuneScape data is available by changing the module parameter (e.g. "m=itemdb_oldschool") in the Grand Exchange Database URLs.

Who is this API intended for?

It's intended for developers, fansite operators, and bots that retrieve information about the game and the wiki.
