About REST Countries

REST Countries is an API providing normalized country data across more than 250 countries and dependencies, covering upward of 90 fields per record including names, ISO codes, capitals, flags, region and subregion, area, borders, calling codes, currencies, languages, political leaders, membership in international organizations, population, timezones, and top-level domains. Data is synced from official sources every 4 hours, and countries are returned with recognition status, alternate names, and the ISO codes published by relevant standards bodies, including contested cases such as Kosovo, Taiwan, and Palestine.

The API supports lookups by ISO code, full-text search across names, capitals, or codes, search by currency or by political leader, and filtering by region or by membership in blocs such as the EU or G7. Requests can combine filters with field selection to limit response size, either by specifying wanted fields or omitting heavy sub-objects, and results can be capped or paginated using limit and offset parameters.

The service is aimed at developers building applications that need structured, up-to-date country reference data, such as country pickers, price lists grouped by currency, or region- and bloc-based filtering, without maintaining their own scraped or hand-assembled dataset. Access requires an API key, and a free tier is available alongside paid plans.
