About JokeAPI

JokeAPI is a REST API that delivers formatted jokes without requiring an API token, membership, registration, or payment. It serves 1368 jokes across 6 languages and supports categories including Programming, Misc, Dark, Pun, Spooky, and Christmas, along with filters for joke type (single or two-part), language, and blacklist flags (nsfw, religious, political, racist, sexist, explicit). Responses can be returned in JSON, XML, YAML, or plain text.

The API includes a safe mode for filtering out potentially offensive content and supports searching jokes by string or ID range. It is rate-limited to 120 requests per minute per client (5 per minute for joke submissions, though submissions are currently disabled), with rate-limit information returned via response headers. A hosted subdomain (v2.jokeapi.dev) is available in addition to the original path-based URL, and the old URL remains usable for backwards compatibility.

JokeAPI is aimed at developers who want to integrate jokes into applications via direct HTTP requests or through community-made wrapper libraries, which exist for languages including C#, Dart, Go, Java, Kotlin, Node.js/JavaScript, Odin, PHP, Python, Rust, and TypeScript. All dependencies are tested for vulnerabilities by Snyk.
