The service is accessed via the api.ipinfo.io endpoint, with authentication handled through a token query parameter, HTTP Basic Authentication, or a Bearer token in the Authorization header. Multiple product tiers exist, including a free IPinfo Lite tier offering unlimited access with country and ASN data, and higher tiers such as Core, Plus, and Max that provide additional data types including geolocation, privacy detection, mobile carrier information, and company data.

The API supports lookups for a specific IP address or the caller's own IP when none is specified, and responses can be filtered to return individual fields or objects rather than the full JSON payload. The system is dual-stacked, supporting both IPv4 and IPv6 connections, with explicit v4 and v6 subdomains available for forcing a particular connection type. Paid plans include a monthly request quota with no daily, hourly, or per-second throttling limits, and optional metered billing for usage beyond the plan limit.
