Google Earth Engine is a geospatial processing service that combines a public data catalog, cloud compute infrastructure, geospatial APIs, and an interactive app server, built on Google Cloud Platform. It provides a petabyte-scale catalog of public, free-to-use geospatial datasets alongside compute infrastructure designed for planetary-scale analysis of Earth science data.

Developers connect to the service through JavaScript, Python, or REST APIs. The JavaScript API can be used interactively through the Code Editor, as an open-source library in Node.js, or to build Earth Engine Apps. The Python API is an open-source library that runs in Colab, a local Python environment, or App Engine. The REST API supports authenticated HTTP requests and offers advanced features aimed at users already familiar with the platform.

The platform also supports building and hosting Earth Engine Apps — dynamic, publicly accessible user interfaces built on Earth Engine analyses. It offers noncommercial quota tiers, with noncommercial projects defaulting to a Community Tier that can be changed per project. It is intended for geospatial algorithm development at scale and data-driven scientific analysis of large geospatial datasets.
