About FRED
FRED provides an API from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis for retrieving economic data. Version 2 retrieves observations for all series on a release in bulk, including full history. Version 1 provides incremental data at the series level and can be customized by data source, release, category, series, and other parameters, drawing from both the FRED and ALFRED websites.
The API is organized around categories, releases, series, sources, and tags, with endpoints covering operations such as retrieving a category and its children or related categories, listing releases and their dates, fetching series data and observations, searching series by keyword, retrieving vintage dates showing when series values were revised, and listing sources and their releases.
A separate FRED Maps API allows retrieval of data and shape files for series that have geographical data available on FRED's maps, including shape files, series group metadata, and regional data. Not all FRED series include geographical data. The documentation also covers real-time periods, API keys, and error handling.
