The Dog API is a free JSON API providing structured data on dog breeds, breed groups, and related facts. It follows the JSON:API convention and requires no authentication or API key. The dataset covers over 340 breeds, with details such as name, description, hypoallergenic status, life expectancy, and weight ranges by sex, along with each breed's group relationship.

Endpoints allow listing and paginating breeds, retrieving a single breed by id, filtering breeds to those with images, and redirecting to breed images in multiple sizes. A separate set of endpoints covers breed groups and standalone facts. Breed images are sourced from Wikimedia Commons and include attribution data (author, license, source) that must be displayed alongside the image.

The API is licensed under MIT, responses may be cached publicly for up to 5 minutes, and an OpenAPI/Swagger specification is provided. It is suited for developers building applications or websites that need dog breed reference data or breed imagery, such as pet-related apps, breed lookup tools, or content sites needing photos with proper attribution.
