Cataas is a REST API that returns images of cats, referred to on the site as "cat as a service." Requests can return a random cat, a cat filtered by tag, or an animated GIF, with responses available as an image, an HTML page, or a JSON object.

The API supports customization options including image type (xsmall, small, medium, square), width and height, and filters such as blur, mono, negate, or custom adjustments to brightness, lightness, saturation, hue, and RGB values. It also supports overlaying custom text on the cat image, with adjustable font size and color. Additional endpoints return lists of cats with pagination (tags, skip, limit parameters) and a list of all available tags.

The service is aimed at developers who want to integrate cat images into applications, websites, or embeds such as Twitter or Facebook cards.
