About Represent by Open North

Represent is an API and dataset covering elected officials and electoral districts across Canada. It matches a postal code or address to the correct elected officials and electoral district, spanning federal, provincial, and municipal levels — including all Members of Parliament, provincial legislators (MLAs, MPPs, MNAs, MHAs), and over 7,000 mayors and councillors, along with federal and provincial electoral district boundaries and over 8,000 municipal wards.

The API is intended for organizations building advocacy tools, such as "email your representative" campaigns, local election coverage tied to a reader's riding, and mapping supporters, donors, or volunteers to electoral districts for canvassing and mobilization. It is used by nonprofits and unions in Canada, and during elections it can also connect users to political candidates.

Represent offers Drupal and WordPress plugins for CMS integration, and API clients for Ruby, Python, PHP, and Node.js. The underlying source data is made available as open data where possible. The project is developed by Open North, a nonprofit focused on government transparency and civic participation tools.
