About NPPES

NPPES NPI Registry Public Search is a free directory of active National Provider Identifier (NPI) records for healthcare providers in the United States. Individuals and organizations apply for NPIs through the CMS National Plan and Provider Enumeration System, and CMS publishes the publicly relevant parts of each record, including provider name, specialty (taxonomy), and practice address. The service is provided by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services under federal law (45 CFR Part 162).

Records can be searched by NPI number, provider type (individual or organization), name, taxonomy description, city, state, country, postal code, and address type, with an option to restrict results to exact matches. Search results are limited to the first 2,100 records, and as of 6/25/2024 the number of NPI Registry queries per hour is limited, with bulk queries directed to use the DDS file instead. The registry is also available as a full downloadable file or through an API.

This resource is intended for developers, healthcare organizations, and others who need to look up or verify NPI records for individual or organizational healthcare providers. The registry notes that issuance of an NPI does not validate that a provider is licensed or credentialed.
