About Navitia

Navitia is a web API for building applications with public transportation and mobility data. It provides multi-modal journey computation, line schedules, next departures, exploration of public transport data, search and autocomplete on places, and isochrones. The API is HATEOAS-based and returns JSON-formatted results, accessible via a public instance at api.navitia.io.

Street network data comes from OpenStreetMap, while public transport data (timetables) is supplied by transit networks that publish open data, with additional data improvements made by Hove. Access requires a token obtained from a PTA (public transport authority), and a "sandbox" coverage with fake data covering a small area of Paris is available for testing without a real token. A Swagger/OpenAPI schema is published at api.navitia.io/v1/schema, and bug reports and feature requests are handled through the project's GitHub issues page.

The documentation is aimed at developers building traveler-information or transit-data applications, covering topics such as authentication, journey planning, timetables, disruptions and real-time integration, ridesharing, taxi, and on-demand transportation objects. Development of Navitia is led by Hove (previously known as Kisio Digital and CanalTP).

Key features

  • Multi-modal journey computation across public transport networks
  • Line schedules and next departures for stops and stations
  • Search and autocomplete on places and transport objects
  • Isochrone computation (currently in beta)
  • Real-time disruption and traffic information
  • Street network data from OpenStreetMap combined with open-data timetables

Frequently asked questions

Is Navitia free to use?

Navitia requires a private access token obtained from your PTA (transport authority); a limited sandbox coverage with fake token/data is available for testing before using a real token.

What format does the API return?

Navitia is a HATEOAS web API that returns JSON formatted results.

Where does the underlying data come from?

Street network data is extracted from OpenStreetMap, and public transport timetables are provided as open data by transport networks, with improvements based on transport.data.gouv.fr.

Who is Navitia for?

It is for developers building applications with mobility data, such as journey planners and traveler information tools for urban transportation networks.

Is there interactive documentation or a sandbox to try the API?

Yes, there is a Navitia Playground for trying requests and a Swagger/OpenAPI documentation available at https://api.navitia.io/v1/schema.
