About Meteorologisk Institutt

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) provides a Weather API offering a suite of meteorological data products, including weather forecasts for any location on earth (Locationforecast), air quality forecasts, aviation weather forecasts and charts (aviation forecasts, sigmets, turbulence prognosis, significant weather charts), ocean and tidal water data, sea ice maps, satellite imagery (geostationary and polar orbit), radar composite images, weather alerts (MetAlerts), and sun/moon event calculations (Sunrise). Data is delivered through REST endpoints, with some products also providing raw formats such as GRIB and METGM/C files.

The API is organized as a catalog of individually versioned products, each labeled by status (normal, beta, deprecated, or external) and by domain icon (land, sea, air). Some products are served directly by MET Norway while others are marked external and fall under separate terms of service. A dataset archive of model runs and observation time series is also available via THREDDS.

The service is intended for developers building applications that need Norwegian and Nordic-region weather, ocean, or aviation data, as well as global location-based forecasts through Locationforecast. Error responses include an HTTP status code and an X-ErrorClass header identifying the cause (e.g., access control, rate limiting, missing data), and the documentation notes that a unique, identifying User-Agent header is required to avoid 403 errors.
