About Imgflip

Imgflip's API provides programmatic access to meme templates and meme/GIF generation. It exposes endpoints to retrieve popular meme templates (/get_memes), add captions to static meme images (/caption_image), caption animated GIF templates (/caption_gif), and search the full database of over 1 million user-uploaded templates (/search_memes). The API uses JSON over REST, with request parameters sent as HTTP form-urlencoded data.

Captioning supports custom text placement through a boxes parameter (up to 20 text boxes per image), with configurable position, size, color, outline color, font, and maximum font size. Requests require an Imgflip account username and password for tracking and authentication. Generated images are publicly accessible via their returned URL, though not discoverable without that URL, and may be auto-deleted after a period of low views.

Basic meme creation and retrieval of top templates are free. A Premium tier, with a base cost of $9.99 per month, is required for GIF captioning, full database search, AI-based meme generation (automeme and ai_meme), and watermark removal. Premium includes a monthly allotment of requests for each of these features (100 watermark-free creations, 50 GIF captions, and 200 searches), with additional usage billed per request ($0.01 per watermark-free creation, $0.02 per GIF caption, $0.005 per search).
