About Binlist

Binlist is a web service for looking up metadata associated with credit and debit card numbers using the Issuer Identification Number (IIN), also known as the Bank Identification Number (BIN) — the first 6 to 8 digits of a payment card. Given a BIN/IIN, it returns information such as card scheme, brand, type (debit, credit, or prepaid), number length, LUHN validity, issuing country (with currency and coordinates), and issuing bank details (name, URL, phone, city).

The service is accessed via a REST API (e.g., a curl request to lookup.binlist.net) that returns JSON-formatted results, and a Node.js/npm package (binlookup) is available for JavaScript environments, supporting both callback and promise-based usage. Requests that find no matching card return an HTTP 404 response.

The free tier is rate-limited to 5 requests per hour with a burst allowance of 5, returning an HTTP 429 status code if exceeded. Unlimited access with support for 8-digit BINs is available starting from EUR 0.003 per request plus a subscription fee, obtained by contacting the service or filling out a signup form. A related premium offering, iinlist.com, provides validated data updated weekly. The underlying data is compiled from multiple sources and includes assumptions based on adjoining card data, and no static database dump is provided; corrections can be submitted via pull requests on the project's GitHub data repository.
