The Imgur API provides RESTful, HTTP-based programmatic access to Imgur's image hosting infrastructure, covering accounts, comments, albums, galleries, images, and feeds. Responses are returned as JSON by default, with JSONP and XML also available. Requests are made over HTTPS using OAuth 2.0, and version 3 is the current stable release, accessed at api.imgur.com/3/.
All applications must register to receive a client_id and client_secret. Public read-only and anonymous actions, such as retrieving image info or user comments, or uploading images anonymously, require only a Client-ID authorization header. Accessing a user's account requires OAuth 2.0 login and an access token. Commercial applications, defined as any app generating revenue or belonging to a commercial organization, must additionally register with RapidAPI, select a pricing plan there, and route requests through a RapidAPI endpoint with an added request header.
The API is rate-limited through a credit allocation system, with each application permitted roughly 1,250 uploads or 12,500 requests per day; remaining credits are reported in response headers. Repeated daily limit violations within a month result in the application being blocked for the remainder of that month. Per-user request limits, tracked by IP address, are also enforced to prevent abuse of individual applications. The documentation is built around a Postman collection for exploring and testing endpoints.
Non-commercial applications can use the API for free by registering an application and using a Client-ID or OAuth 2.0. Commercial applications must register with RapidAPI and choose a paid pricing plan.
Each application gets approximately 1,250 uploads or 12,500 requests per day, and remaining credits are shown in the X-RateLimit-ClientRemaining header. Hitting the daily limit five times in a month results in the app being blocked for the rest of the month.
The API uses OAuth 2.0, requiring app registration and a client_id/client_secret; anonymous read-only or upload requests only need a Client-ID authorization header.
Responses can be returned as JSON (default), JSONP, or XML by specifying the appropriate extension on the request URL.
It's for developers who want to programmatically access Imgur's infrastructure, such as uploading images, managing albums and galleries, or reading comments, in their own applications.
