About French Address Search

The geocoding service run by France's Géoplateforme (formerly the Base Adresse Nationale API Adresse, which is being decommissioned at the end of January 2026) provides address search and coordinate lookup for the French national address database. It supports direct geocoding, converting a postal address, place name, or cadastral parcel into geographic coordinates from an HTTP request, and reverse geocoding, returning the nearest matching addresses, place names, cadastral parcels, or administrative units from one or more latitude/longitude points. Both types of geocoding are available as single calls or batched through CSV file uploads, with a separate CSV geocoding tool provided on the site. The underlying data is refreshed from the Base Adresse Nationale twice a week.

The service is aimed at developers and organizations needing to integrate French address search or reverse geocoding into scripts or applications, including public-sector actors. It enforces a rate limit of 50 requests per second per IP, returning an HTTP 429 with a retry-after header (starting at 5 seconds) when exceeded; public-sector users with service-public missions can request an exemption from this limit, and anyone can alternatively self-host the service using a Docker instance loaded with BAN data, though self-hosted deployments fall outside IGN's supported scope.

Key features

  • Direct geocoding: converts a postal address, place, or cadastral parcel into geographic coordinates
  • Bulk geocoding of CSV files via unitary or grouped file calls
  • CSV Geocoder tool available on the site for geocoding files
  • Geocoding engine refreshed from BAN data twice a week
  • Self-hostable via a Docker instance loaded with BAN data

Frequently asked questions

Is this API free to use?

Yes, it is a free public service (Service public gratuit) provided by the French government to reference and make usable all addresses in the territory.

Is there a rate limit?

Yes, usage is limited to 50 calls per IP per second; exceeding this returns an HTTP 429 error with a retry-after header, initially 5 seconds.

Is the old API Adresse BAN endpoint still supported?

No, the API Adresse BAN is deprecated and integrated into the new Geoplateforme geocoding service; the api-adresse.data.gouv.fr URL will be decommissioned at the end of January 2026.

Can I self-host this service?

Yes, you can install a Docker instance with BAN data on your own servers, though this setup is not supported by IGN.

Who is this service for?

It is aimed at developers and public sector actors needing to geocode French addresses, points of interest, or cadastral parcels; public service actors facing rate limits can request an exemption via IGN's geoservices contact form.
